Barry Parker

It is with great sadness that the group has learned of the passing of Barry Parker.  A member and supporter of the 1st Calow since its very early days, Barry retained his links with the group throughout his life.  In March 2009, Barry officially opened the C.W. Handford Memorial Garden, built as part of the group’s 75th anniversary celebrations.  Along with his brother Clifford (a founding member of 1st Calow), Barry was instumental in returning the crossed keys of St Peter to the back of 1st Calow neckerchiefs and in a remarkeble gesture of kindness to the group, Barry and Clifford designed and financed the production of the crossed keys badge that is now once again worn by all members of 1st Calow.

In recent years Barry has attended numerous group events and imparted some wonderful insights and anecdotes about his time as a Scout in Calow.

Our sincerest condolencies go to Barry’s family.

September 2010

A new year of Scouting has begun, with all sections returning to weekly meetings in early September.

The summer break was a busy time for all those attending or working at Peak 2010 and for the families playing host to our Canadian friends from the 25th Nepean.  Once more, the Canadians thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we are grateful to all those who organised events/trips etc. for our guests.

We have welcomed new members into the Beaver Colony and Cub Pack, with some existing Group members progressing into their next section, including a number of Scouts who have gone on to join Canotila Explorer Unit.

The Scout section are now looking forward to a return visit to Canada in August 2011 and considerable work is already underway to organise events to help raise the requisite funds to enable the trip to go ahead.

Baroness Richardson of Calow and BBC Radio 4 visited the Cub pack to record a piece for a programme about the Baroness to be broadcast in early 2011.

The Cubs have already held their first weekend camp of the ‘new year’, at Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre.  The Cubs enjoyed a ‘Medieval’ themed weekend and for some, this was their very first experience of a Scout Camp.  We are thankful to the Leaders and helpers who organised this so early in the programme.

The site will be updated frequently with details of events for both Group and ‘Canada’ related fundraising events in the coming months.  The entire website will be updated with greater frequency this year, with the possibility of more features and access to information, documents etc. to download.  Please be patient but things will begin to change.

Christmas fundraising catalogues have already been distributed and in November we will be having a further clothing collection to bolster group funds.

The Group is also soon to produce and distribute a short document for parents/carers of Group members.  This will detail the events (Church Services, Parades etc.) that members are obliged to attend and include a few guidelines (some set by the Scout Association) indicating the Group and individual members’ respective responsibilities.

2009-2010, a successful year for the Group.
Representatives from the Scout Troop and Cub Pack receiving the Premier Troop Winners, Camping Competition Winners and Premier Pack Runners Up awards at District Headquarters from Councillor Keith Morgan, Mayor of Chesterfield.

We are lucky at 1st Calow to have such an experienced and well respected Leadership team in all sections.  Without them, the Group would enjoy the degree of success it does, and certainly not be in a position to provide such great Scouting experiences for the young people of Calow and the surrounding area.

DUCK RACE 2010

Chesterfield Scout Fellowship have organised a fundraising Duck Race for Sunday 20th June at Somersall Park, Chesterfied, starting at 2pm when 500 numbered ducks will be released into the river!

Each Scout Group in the District is being encouraged to use the event to raise funds for their own group.  We need to sell tickets numbered 1-500 at £1 each and provide prizes (either in cash or some other worthy prize) for the Ducks crossing the finish line in 1st, 2nd and Last places.

This is a great opportunity to raise a substantial amount towards Group funds without any organisation from ourselves.  The tickets will be available from Section Leaders or the Group Chair from 7.30 on Friday 11the June.  If the family of each Beaver, Cub or  Scout can sell approximately 7 t0 8 tickets each, we will quickly sell them all.  Please support this event and in doing so your children’s/ward’s Scouting activities!

Detauils of the prizes will be announced on Friday 11th June 2010.
